Transitions between shots

Add an entrance or exit#

1. Select one or more visual clips.
2. Open Transitions.
3. Choose the entrance or exit edge and a duration.
4. Click Cross dissolve, Dip to black, Dip to white, a directional wipe, Iris, or Zoom dissolve.

Yellow strips on the Timeline identify applied transitions. Click a strip to reopen the panel. None removes the selected edge; Remove both transitions clears the entrance and exit.

What happens at a cut#

At adjacent video or image cuts on the same track, an incoming dissolve or reveal keeps the previous shot underneath the new one. It uses available source handles and holds the final source frame if those handles run out. The clip positions and overall timeline timing stay unchanged.

Other entrances and exits reveal underlying layers or the background. If you expected a dissolve between two shots but see black, check adjacency, track placement, and whether there is a visible layer beneath the transition.

Duration and order#

A transition is limited to half the clip's duration, so a very short clip cannot carry a long entrance or exit. Transitions run after the clip's other effects. Preview both sides of the cut to catch an unexpected held frame or an overly long reveal.

Sound does not follow automatically#

These are visual transitions. Use audio fades or Crossfade selection for sound. Crossfades require overlapping audio on separate tracks and do not move the picture edit.
