Audio & mixing
Automation, fades, and crossfades
Write precise level changes and smooth audio joins without moving the edit.
Automate a mix control#
Automation supports volume, pan, the original EQ, additional EQ-band parameters, compressor parameters, reverb send, and delay controls on tracks, buses, and master.
- Choose a control in Automation.
- Add a point at the playhead or enter a timeline time.
- Set its value and ramp/hold behavior.
- Add another point, play the interval, and refine it.
Active lanes override static controls. Disable Read automation to compare without deleting the points. Clip volume automation remains in the clip inspector.
Fade a clip#
Use numeric durations or drag the audio-clip fade handles. Handles support keyboard arrow adjustments. Choose linear, equal-power, or S curves, then listen at the actual edit to judge the contour.
Crossfade two clips#
Crossfade selection applies complementary equal-power fades to two clips whose end/start regions already overlap on separate tracks. Arrange that overlap first, select the two clips, and apply the command. It does not move clips or change picture synchronization.
A clip entirely contained inside another is not an end/start crossfade. If the command cannot apply, check that exactly the intended clips overlap at an outgoing and incoming edge.
Review effect tails#
Reverb and delay can continue past a clip edge. Use an exact preview and choose an appropriate export tail when you need to hear or deliver the decay. A visual transition has separate timing and does not replace these sound controls.
